Fact and Fallacy Surrounding Food as a Cause of Acne

Diet has long been associated with outbreaks of acne despite there being no definite evidence of specific foods being to blame. It is possible however that individuals have reactions to some foods which can lead to an acne outbreak and whatever foods are concerned must be isolated to achieve a long lasting cure for acne.

Here are some other factors pertaining to potential links between food and incidence of acne:

* Popular opinion that chocolate can cause acne or worsen an existing condition is not universally supported by scientific studies. Recent studies suggest the high glycemic nature of certain foods containing carbohydrates can cause acne, and point to chocolate having low glycemic content which may in fact restrict the ailment.   More evidence that a low glycemic diet helps prevent acne comes from studies of non-westernised countries where the condition is relatively unknown. Conversely, many scientists believe acne in westernised countries may be due to a high incidence of carbohydrates in the diet which can lead to excess sebum or oil in the skin which in itself is commonly associated with acne.
* A diet rich in fresh fruit and vegetables is believed to prevent acne or treat whatever condition already exists. One of the best ways to increase your fruit and vegetable intake is by drinking lots of smoothies and juices made from fresh fruit and vegetables.
* Scientists suggest a possible relationship between incidence of acne and consumption of skimmed milk, cottage cheese and other dairy products.

* Recent studies in the USA conclude that crisps, once thought to be linked to the ailment, are unlikely to share any blame.
